About
Enough about you, let's talk about me.
Hi, I'm McKay Wood
I go by a few nicknames. The Mortgage Monk. The Bowtie Broker. But behind the fun monikers you'll find an enthusiastic family man. Here are a few details about me that you might find interesting:
- Family: My wife is an exceptionally brilliant artist. I have two energetic kids and one lazy French bulldog.
-
Languages: I speak French, Kiswahili, Mandarin and Spanish… And just enough English to get by
.
- Education: I graduated Brigham Young University with a degree in international development and a minor in African Studies.
- Red Cross: I worked for the Canadian Red Cross under ‘Mines Action Canada’ to raise awareness and funds in support of landmine victims.
- Tourism: I started two tour companies: An eco-tour of Vancouver for Spanish speaking visitors, and the Big Bus hop-on hop-off tours of Vancouver. If in the past you’ve seen vintage double decker buses around town, that was possibly me.
- Hobbies: I love to ride my motorcycle, and I have a huge collection of bowties.
Origin Story
Real estate is hands-down my favourite investment vehicle. I currently own a handful of homes in Vancouver and I’ve bought and sold a few more properties over the years.
And as much as a good real estate investment is a builder of wealth, a bad mortgage is a destroyer of wealth.
Early payout penalties, high interest rates and banking fees all add up to eat up the equity your building. I’ve experienced it first hand on the first homes I purchased. When I learned only 30% of Canadians use a mortgage broker, I decided I wanted to help others avoid the same mistakes I made.
